Police in Guelph are taking the unusual step of asking for the public’s help to identify two witnesses in connection with a Labour Day assault that has left a 27-year-old man in critical condition.
Guelph Police Sgt. Doug Pflug says “Our investigators have investigated all avenues and we don’t know who these people are.”
The incident happened around 12:20 a.m. last Monday, Sept. 3 in the area of Carden and Wyndham Streets.
The victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Guelph General Hospital before being transferred to Hamilton General Hospital.
“He underwent emergency surgery. He remains there today in critical condition and he is unconscious,” Pflug says.
The same day as the altercation, 26-year-old Christopher Huisman of Guelph was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
On Thursday, 32-year-old Michael Gagnon who is also from Guelph was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in the same incident.
Police would like to speak to two men who were in the area when the assault happened.
Pflug says “They were not involved directly in the incident but we do feel they have information that could be critical.”
Both men are described as white and 20-30 years of age. One of the men apparently interacted with one of the suspects at the scene.
The other was apparently on Carden Street in front of the old train station around the time of the incident.
At this point police believe the attack was random, but it is yet another fact that might be confirmed by additional witnesses.
