Bag limits and less frequent collection are two of the ideas being considered as Waterloo Region looks to revamp its waste collection service.

Regional councillors have been presented with two options for a new-look curbside pickup service.

Under the first option, garbage would continue to be collected every week, but a two-bag-per-house limit would be introduced.

A bag tag program would be introduced to ensure households follow that limit.

The other option would see pickup frequency reduced to every two weeks, with a limit of four garbage bags per pickup.

Recycling boxes and green bins would continue to be picked up weekly.

Waste management officials hope increased limits on garbage pickup will lead to more items being placed in recycling or green bins.

It’s estimated that the majority of garbage picked up in Waterloo Region contains items that could be disposed of in green bins, with an additional 14 per cent able to be recycled.

A recommendation is expected to be presented to regional councillors later this month.
