An early-morning search of Lake Huron for a missing Waterloo man ended in success.

Bruce Peninsula OPP say they were notified around 1 a.m. Wednesday of a 20-year-old man who hadn’t been seen since he left shore in a kayak more than two hours earlier.

Police later learned that the man had been staying with friends at a residence on the Southampton Parkway, south of Sauble Beach in Saugeen First Nation.

Two of his friends had gone kayaking Tuesday night. When they didn’t return, the Waterloo man left on his own in an attempt to find them.

As he searched for his friends – who had safely returned to shore – his own kayak capsized in the water.

OPP, the Canadian Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Air Force were brought in to search for the kayaker, using several vessels as well as a helicopter and an airplane.

Their search ended in success shortly before 7 a.m., when the man was found in the water.

He was taken to a Wiarton hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
