In the past 14 years, there have been plenty of changes to Ontario’s Liquor License Act.

Waterloo’s own alcohol policy, by contrast, hasn’t been touched – or hadn’t, until a new version was approved Monday.

Under the new policy, alcohol will be able to be served at a wide array of city facilities – if certain criteria are met – including Waterloo Public Square, major parks and city-owned parking lots and cemeteries.

Bylaw or police enforcement will be increased to ensure event attendees are following whatever guidelines have been set for their event.

The changes take effect June 1.

Currently, fewer than 50 public events per year are approved for liquor permits in Waterloo.
