The worker killed in an accident at a construction site on Belmont Avenue West in Kitchener has been identified as 43-year-old John Luis Catunto of London, Ont.

Waterloo Regional police released the name with the permission of his family.

Catunto was killed on Wednesday when he was struck by an eight tonne slab of concrete being lifted by a crane at the condo development site.

His family is remembering him as a loving father, son and brother. He is from a large Portuguese family, the sixth of eight children, and had four children and a stepson of his own.

Younger brother Mike Catunto says "John was a great father, he was a beautiful, beautiful son, he was a fantastic brother, he was an amazing friend…he would help anybody, he wouldn't say no."

John would have celebrated his 44th birthday in about two weeks, his brother says, and was to be married to his fiancée Brenda, in October.

Mike adds "She just keeps crying to me, and asking me, 'Bring your brother back, bring the love of my life back.' That's all she keeps asking me to do."

The family remains anxious to find out what happened on Wednesday.

The construction site remains closed as the Ministry of Labour investigation continues. The developer, Tricar Group, says it is working with investigators to find out what went wrong.

According to the Ministry of Labour's Matt Blajer, "At this time further testing and inspection of the crane will continue next week, and the scene remains held pending further investigation. In other words the scene can't be disturbed."

The company is also dealing with a second investigation in connection with an accident at the same site on Feb. 22, when another worker was hit by a bin being moved by a crane.

A visitation will be held Monday at the O'Neil Funeral Home in London, Ont., while the funeral mass is planned for Tuesday morning at Holy Cross Church, also in London.
