It’s the day when lovers exchange cards, gifts, flowers and chocolates with their special ‘valentine.’ One more sleep until February 14th, the date when jewelry stores and flower shops see lots of foot traffic.

A RetailMeNot study found that on average Canadians spend $164 on Valentine’s Day and 82% say women are more spoiled than men.

But 80% of Canadians believe February 14th causes too much pressure and is too pricey.

According to the survey, the average amounts spent on some popular gifts include: $190 for jewelry, $61 for lingerie and $18 for candy and chocolate.

The study also found only 31% of women feel celebrating Valentine’s Day is important.

Everyone we spoke to in Waterloo Region all seemed to agree on the same thing; the day should be spent with the person you love, at no cost.
