A man and women pleaded guilty Wednesday to various offences in connection with a small-scale ring of break-ins, credit card fraud and identity theft.

Court heard that Jeremy Hodder and Shannon Fryers committed several such crimes over the course of three months.

Hodder, 33, was a former recipient of the Governor General’s Decoration for Bravery.

He received the award in 2011, after saving a man’s life following a truck explosion on Highway 401.

Wednesday, he was sentenced to nine months in prison – including the six already served.

Fryers, 30, was sentenced to six months in prison, and released from custody Wednesday due to time already served.

“She’s a good mother. It’s just (that) a drug took over her life,” lawyer Sean Safa said outside court.

Court heard that the pair would break into vehicles, looking for unattended wallets or purses.

They would then use stolen credit cards to buy coffee and fast food, and stolen identification to purchase phone contracts.

The break-ins occurred in Kitchener, New Hamburg and Petersburg.

In late July, the stolen goods were found in a Kitchener hotel.

One other case remains before the courts in connection with this investigation.
