CALEDONIA, Ont. -- Two people are dead and three others have been taken to hospital after an apartment fire south of Hamilton.

Provincial police say the apartment in the 30-unit building in Caledonia caught fire early Saturday morning.

They say the blaze was contained to the single apartment and was quickly put out by firefighters.

Two residents were pronounced dead inside the apartment, while another three were rushed to hospital for smoke inhalation.

The rest of the building's residents were taken to a nearby shelter facility.

No names have been released and the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze.
