Two people scrambled to safety early Wednesday morning when their vehicle suddenly fell into a sinkhole at the site of a water main break in Kitchener’s south end.

City officials say the water main break occurred around 1 a.m., on Strasburg Road near Battler Road.

By 2:30 a.m., responding crews had to deal with the water pouring out from the main, as well as call police to handle traffic in the area.

“The water was covering the road, and basically vehicles were driving through,” said Tammer Gaber, the manager of operations for Kitchener Utilities.

“We were in the process of getting the road closure up and running, at which point we had a vehicle drive through the area and end up in the sinkhole.”

That vehicle was a pickup truck towing a trailer. Its cab ended up almost completely submerged in the sinkhole.

Its driver and passenger climbed onto the vehicle’s roof in a bid to stay out of the water.

They were eventually able to get off the roof and past the water, unhurt.

By 10 a.m., crews were starting the lengthy process of pulling the truck out of the hole.

Strasburg was expected to remain closed for traffic for the rest of the day, while the industrial area around the sinkhole was expected to be without water for some time until the break could be repaired.
