The parents of an 11-year-old boy killed in a crash in 2011 took to the stand Tuesday to testify at the trial of the man charged in connection with his death.

Jeremy Glenfield faces charges of impaired driving, dangerous driving causing death and failure to provide a breath sample in connection with the Dec. 22, 2011 crash Nafziger and Gerber roads.

Seriously hurt in the crash, Jeremy Huber was taken off life support two days later.

Speaking in court, father Kevin Huber said he didn’t hear any tires squealing in the moments before the crash, nor did he have any other advance warning.

“I didn’t see what hit us,” he said.

Huber testified that when he first saw his vehicle after the crash – days later – it had clear marks of impact near his son’s seat in the back row.

“The bucket seats were completely pushed together and bowed out the other side of the vehicle,” he said.

Under cross-examination from defence lawyer Robert Burke, Huber was asked about his knowledge of the roads in the area – specifically, a “crest” encountered by southbound traffic on Nafziger Road.

“I would not call that a crest,” he said, later admitting to “a slight crest” after cross-examination.”

Tuesday afternoon, Erna Huber – Jeremy’s mother – took the stand and told the court of her memories of the crash, during which she remained conscious.

She recalled “this awful sound, like an explosion, then the vehicle started moving.”

She also recalled Glenfield turning to the Hubers and expressing sympathy after emergency crews arrived.

“He said something like ‘If that guy doesn’t make it, I’m going to kill myself,’” she testified.

After that, Huber said, she turned to him and said ‘Don’t do that. God loves you.’”

The case was expected to be heard by a jury, but jury selection ended Tuesday when Burke chose to instead forge ahead with a judge trial.
