Monday was the third day of cleanup of a petroleum-like product that somehow spilled into the Grand River in Kitchener.

Crews took down a number of trees lining a trail along the shoreline to improve their access to the area.

Barricades were also put up, in a bid to keep the public away from a section of the river’s north shoreline about 250 metres long.

As the cleanup continues, so too does the investigation into exactly what spilled into the Grand and exactly where it came from.

“We have found a source where a private storm system is entering the city’s infrastructure, but beyond that we have not been able to identify the source,” said Scott Berry, the city’s manager of maintenance operations.

City crews have tracked the spill to the Centennial Road area, near the city’s eastern boundary.

The Ministry of the Environment said only that it had traced the spill to somewhere between Victoria Street and Shirley Avenue.

A camera was sent up the pipe Sunday, but failed to provide officials with any concrete answers as to the origin of the spill.
