Toyota is recalling nearly 2.8-million vehicles around the world for a steering shaft defect that may result in faulty steering, and a water pump problem in some hybrids.

Included in the steering recall are 670-thousand vehicles in the U-S -- but Canadian numbers aren't known yet.

Affected models include the Prius hybrid and Corolla from between 2000 and 2009.

Separately, Toyota is recalling 630-thousand vehicles spanning five hybrid models, including the Prius, for a defective water pump.

Some vehicles are targets of both recalls.
