Unifor’s latest attempt to gain a foothold at Toyota’s plants in Cambridge and Woodstock has gone down to defeat.

In a secret ballot conducted over the last few days, maintenance workers at the two plants voted narrowly against unionization.

A total of 278 workers said no to the union, while 238 voted in favour.

Speaking to CTV Kitchener, Unifor organizing director John Aman said the union is glad workers had a chance to make their voices heard and respects the outcome of the vote.

Asked if there would be another attempt to unionize Toyota, Aman said the union continues to work with production workers in the Toyota plants, and believes there is strong support for unionization.

In 2014, Unifor planned a certification vote but pulled its request for such a vote off the table days before it was expected to start.
