A tow truck was taken out of service Tuesday under a new Waterloo Region regulation governing tow trucks.

Waterloo Regional Police say it was one of two trucks spotted at the scene of a collision at Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road.

The problem is that, under a bylaw updated last month, tow trucks cannot be within 200 metres of a collision unless they have already been contacted by one of the drivers involved in the collision, or by police.

An inspection of the truck found that its brakes were defective, as a result of which it was taken out of service.

The drivers of both trucks were charged under the bylaw, which carries penalties of fines.
