A friend of Linda and Cheyenne Daniel says she’s still in shock after hearing the news of their deaths.

Jasmin Orde remembers living in the same Simcoe apartment building as the mother and daughter up until 2005.

She remembers Linda Daniel as someone who was like a second mother to her, and her daughter Cheyenne as being a bit quieter, but always wanting to be a part of whatever Orde and the older kids were up to.

“She was a very curious little kid,” Orde said Tuesday.

At this point, there are still far more questions than answers about what happened to the Daniels, and how Glenn Bauman – Linda’s common-law partner and Cheyenne’s stepfather – came to be arrested and charged with murder in their deaths.

For Orde, one question stands above the rest.

“I don’t understand how it didn’t get reported,” she said.

She’s referring to the four-and-a-half-year gap between the last time the Daniels were seen alive and when they were reported missing to police.

As of July 2011, they were living in Wellesley Township. Cheyenne had been attending Linwood Public School.

Officials with the Waterloo Region District School Board say the school was informed that Cheyenne would not be back that September, because they were moving out of the province.

Police aren’t aware of any contact either Cheyenne or her mother had with anyone after that point.

In December 2015, a family member contacted police to say they hadn’t heard from the Daniels in years.

An investigation was then launched, culminating last Friday in Bauman’s arrest in Valleyview, Alberta – a small community northwest of Edmonton.

In Alberta, Bauman had been working at an oil trucking company. His manager says he quit that job earlier this month, citing a desire to switch industries.

Waterloo Regional Police are also trying to get a better idea of the timeline around the Daniels’ disappearances and deaths.

They say they want to hear from anyone who has information that could help investigators.
