Early-morning thunderstorms left Waterloo Region with its biggest one-day rainfall total in nearly four months.

Environment Canada says 30 mm of precipitation was recorded at the Region of Waterloo International Airport, with 31.2 mm experienced at a second location in the region.

The storm brought 32.5 mm of rain to Tillsonburg, 34.2 mm to Elora, and even more to the Niagara area, where some weather stations reported nearly 50 mm of rainfall.

Strong winds were also experienced in some areas. As of Monday afternoon, the highest speed reported came from Brantford, where a wind gust of 89 km/h was recorded.

The storm did not appear to have caused any significant damage, although there were some power outages along the northern shore of Lake Erie.

Nearly as much rain fell over the course of a few hours Monday as Waterloo Region had seen in all of July up until that point.

At 30 mm, Monday’s rainfall was the most seen locally in one day since 39.8 mm of rainfall was recorded on March 31.
