Labour Day weekend means the new school year is just around the corner, bringing with it thousands of students to Waterloo region.

There are around ten thousand first year students starting at Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo this year. For most it is their first time away from home.

“It’s really overwhelming… it’s exciting, I’m excited to be here,” said first year student Crystal Marshand, who moved to Waterloo from Huntsville.

Marshand is looking forward to the opportunities a new school and city can bring.

“Meeting new people definitely, because I’ve been with the same group of friends my whole life,” she explained

Student volunteers were on hand at UW and WLU to greet new students and help them move in.

The municipal enforcement team will also be talking with students during orientation week to make sure they know about property standards and noise bylaws.

“We want to remind students that Waterloo is their home, and that being part of a community comes with responsibilities, including being considerate of neighbours and following local bylaws,” said Jim Barry, the city’s director of municipal enforcement services.
