This Canada Day is a special one for a Cambridge family; it’s the first Canada Day they will celebrate as Canadian citizens. The Kondratenkos family moved from Lithuania in 2005, following other family members.

“We were always dreaming to come here to Canada, to live in Canada. That was my goal since I was 10 years old,” said Dennis Kondratenko.

The family became Canadian citizens during a ceremony Tuesday in Cambridge. On their first full day as Canadians, they celebrated by heading to a local fair.

“We got our citizenship so now we are Canadians so we should celebrate,” said Catherine Kondratenko.

Each year Canada welcomes approximately 250,000 new citizens from around the world. Across the country 2,300 Canadians took the citizenship oath on Canada Day.

“We were waiting for ten years to get (citizenship), and it gives us more chances and we’re very proud,” Dennis said.
