Waterloo's most high profile company, Research In Motion is making headlines again.

According to several published reports, the BlackBerry maker could be laying off several thousand people worldwide as early as next week.

RIM officials aren't commenting on the reports, they say at this point they won't confirm the rumours.

Technology expert Carmi Levy says "6000 is certainly a scary number but it's not out of the realm of possibility because the company's market share is absolutely crashing in North America and it isn't doing so well elsewhere."

After RIM's most recent quarterly earnings, the company announced a loss of $125 million; CEO Thorsten Heins said "it is now very clear to me that substantial change is what RIM needs."

The company plans to find one billion dollars worth of savings by next year.

So far, there's been no indication of which departments or which cities could be affected by the rumoured cuts.

The Globe and Mail reports the downsizing could happen around June 1st. One day before the end of RIM's next fiscal quarter.

If the reports prove to be true, this would be RIM's second major round of cuts in the past twelve months.
