Residents of a trailer park west of Brantford haven’t been evicted from their homes – but they say it sure feels like they have.

For years, residents of Crestwood Lake Trailer Park have been able to stay in their trailers year-round.

Last month, they received a letter notifying them that this practice would no longer be allowed – and the park could no longer be occupied between Thanksgiving weekend and April.

“In the past, the County of Brant has closed their eyes to … campers occupying their sites year round,” the letter reads.

“However, with the newly updated bylaws now in place, do not rely on them continuing to do so.”

County officials say they’re not sure what “newly updated bylaws” the letter is referring to. The county has long had a bylaw banning year-round stays in trailer parks, even if it hasn’t been enforced at Crestwood Lake.

For residents of the Burford-area park, the specifics of why they’re being asked to leave aren’t nearly as pressing a concern as finding a new place to spend their winters.

“We were told it was year-round,” says Debbie Osbourne.

“I would have never bought my trailer if it wasn’t year-round.”

Shannon Butler says she too was sold on Crestwood Lake after being told that there would be no issue with her and her husband living there full-time.

“This is my home. I want to live here,” she says.

Approximately 100 people have been calling Crestwood Lake home year-round. Some of them say they’re considering taking legal action against the trailer park.

Crestwood Lake staff declined to conduct an interview with CTV News for this story.
