Teachers at Laurelwood Public School in Waterloo toned down plans to protest at 'Meet the Teacher' night.

Parents were originally told to expect picket lines outside the school, in protest against the government's legislated contracts.

However, teachers changed their minds and put away the protest signs.

"The teachers have decided that we're concerned about giving the image that we're picking a fight with our school board, or with our school, or with our administration, and that is not our intent," explains teacher Rick Moffitt.

Teachers said they still wanted to make their message clear and many were on hand to explain how the government bill will affect both teachers and students.

Bill 115 freezes wages, cuts benefits and prevents strikes and the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) in Waterloo Region says everybody is upset about it.

As part of the legislation, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty took away teachers’ right to collective bargaining.

The ETFO says they care about their students, but want parents to know how the bill affects their abilities to volunteer outside the classroom.

Students in other parts of Ontario have already staged protests after sports and other extra-curricular activities at their schools were cancelled.

Now students are also getting caught in the middle in Waterloo Region.

Football practice was cancelled for many high school students on Wednesday and more cancellations are expected at elementary schools next week.
