As they arrested a landlord believed to have attacked his tenant and believed to be carrying a gun, Brantford Police say they discovered a large pool of blood around the man’s foot.

The incident began last Friday, when a man called police to report an altercation at his Simpson Street home.

The man claimed he had been involved in a physical confrontation with his landlord, which allegedly included the landlord hitting him with a barbell and choking him.

After that, the man told police, the landlord lifted up his shirt to show off a revolver-type weapon he had in his waistband.

Police say they caught up with the landlord about six hours later – early Saturday morning – as he returned to Simpson Street.

Officers then conducted a high-risk takedown, ordering the man to exit his vehicle slowly.

As the man was placed under arrest, police say they noticed the blood at the man’s feet, with more “oozing” from his shoe.

The man had allegedly shot himself in the foot sometime between when the initial call was made to police and when the landlord returned to his home, hours later.

He was taken to hospital for treatment of his injury.

A loaded revolver was found in his vehicle, police say.

A 47-year-old Brantford man faces charges including assault, assault with a weapon, various offences relating to unauthorized possession of a weapon, reckless use of a firearm and breach of probation.
