A new survey says 81% of Canadians see nothing wrong with picking up something for themselves while doing their holiday shopping.

“It’s tough when you’re shopping and you have to buy stuff for people, you see stuff that you like naturally, and we all want to get something for ourselves,” said shopper Abby Canie.

Canie hasn’t picked up anything for herself yet.

“I’m just focusing on getting  everyone else done before focusing on myself,” she said.

“If I’m going to spend $400 on other people, I’m going to spend $100 on myself,” said Josh Botnick.

He’s not alone; the survey by website RetailMeNot.ca said Canadians plan to spend on average $200 on themselves this holiday season, but not everyone agrees.

“I feel like Christmas is the time for giving, and not for buying for yourself,” said Hayleigh Fazil.

“Sometimes I’ll see something that I really like, but then I think again and it’s like no, I should be buying for other people because it’s a nice thing to do, I shouldn’t be greedy like that and buy stuff for myself,” Fazil said.
