The University of Guelph and members of United Steelworkers Local 4120 reached a tentative deal late Friday, night avoiding a strike.

Had a deal not been reached by midnight, 900 administrative and technical staff say they were prepared to walk off the job.

The previous contract had expired on April 30, and key labour issues for the union included pensions and job security for staff.

“These were challenging negotiations, but we have made real gains for our members,” said Wendy Morley, President of USW Local 4120.

Until union members review the agreement and hold a ratification vote, details of the tentative deal will not be released publicly, according to union officials.
