A block of downtown Hanover remained closed Wednesday morning, one day after a police standoff at an apartment.

Hanover Police say they were called to the 10th street apartment around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, after learning of a disturbance.

According to police, officers arrived on scene to find a man bleeding from his hands.

10th Street was then blocked off between 7th and 9th Avenues, and the OPP and West Grey Police were also called to the scene.

Police say the man was in an upper-floor apartment, and was throwing items from the apartment to the ground below, as well as threatening police officers and claiming to have weapons and explosives with him.

After the man allegedly started two fires in the apartment, police entered the building, used a conducted energy weapon on the man and placed him under arrest.

He was taken to hospital for treatment for a fractured wrist, which police believe was self-inflicted.

He has since been released from hospital into police custody.

Monday, 40-year-old Richard Williams was charged with arson endangering life, assault causing bodily harm, assault, mischief and uttering threats.

Due to the injuries he received, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has assigned three people to look into the incident.

10th Street reopened around noon Wednesday.
