ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Niagara Regional Police have made an arrest in connection with a violent sexual assault that allegedly occurred in a playground in St. Catharines earlier this month.

Police say a woman was sitting near a playground at about 2:40 a.m. on May 3 when she was attacked by a man who had spoken to her earlier in the day.

After a lengthy investigation, police announced the arrest of Brian Henry James, 33, of St. Catharines, on Saturday.

He is charged with sexual assault with a weapon and overcome resistance by choking.

James is due for a bail hearing today.

Police want to hear from anyone with information.
