The Brantford Red Sox finished off the Kitchener Panthers with a 5-2 victory to sweep their best-of-seven Major Inter-County Baseball semi-final on Thursday night.  In the other series, the Barrie Baycats downed the Guelph Royals 7-6 with a ninth inning run to take a 2-1 lead in their semi-final series.  Game #4 is Saturday night in Guelph at 7:30 p.m.

In Barrie, the Baycats scored the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth when Jon Waltenbury drove in Ryan Spataro who had led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jeff Cowan.  The Baycats had jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Royals answered with a six-run fifth inning, sparked by Kevin Treichel’s three run home run, to take a 6-5 lead.  Barrie tied the game back up at 6-6 in the sixth inning, before Waltenbury’s game-winning RBI single in the ninth.

In Kitchener, the Red Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the strength of Steve Lewis’ RBI double in the second inning, followed by Josh McCurdy’s two-run home run in the fifth.  Scott Thorman rounded out the Brantford scoring with a solo home run in the eighth inning. The homer was Thorman’s fourth of the series along with eight RBI.
