Negotiations are ongoing to bring the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic Golf Tournament back to Waterloo for another two years.

The original agreement was three years at Grey Silo Golf Course, plus an option for an additional two years.  At this point, there is no final contract in place for 2015 and ’16, although it appears a new deal is close.

“It’s a contract between Manulife and the tournament owner, which is Sports Properties International.  Those contract negotiations are ongoing,“ says Tournament Director Richard Kuypers.  “We want to bring this tournament here long-term.  Economic impact that the tournament brings of anywhere from 15-to-20-million dollars per year is pretty heavy.”

Hee Young Park is the defending Manulife champion.  Her winning score last year was 26-under par, while Brittany Lang took the inaugural tournament with a score of minus-16.

Despite those low numbers, Kuypers says there will be no major changes to the course for this year’s event.

“We’re not going to tinker with the yardage too much.  Spectators want to see good golf.  They want to see birdies.”

Grey Silo is now open to the public.  This year’s Manulife Financial LPGA Classic tees off on Thursday, June 5th.
