It took until the fifth round before area players began to hear their names called in Monday’s Canadian Football League draft.  In the end, however, seven university football players with strong local connections were chosen by CFL teams.

Wilfrid Laurier Running Back Isaac Dell was the first to go.  Dell was the first player chosen in the fifth round, going 37th overall to the Hamilton Ti-Cats.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders had the next two picks and chose Waterloo Offensive Lineman Matt Vonk with the 38th pick, followed by Laurier Receiver Alex Anthony at #39.

The last area player taken in the fifth round was Guelph Offensive Lineman Jake Piotrowski, who went 41st overall to the Montreal Alouettes.

Kitchener Forest Heights grad Mike Daly went in Round #6.  The McMaster Defensive Back will stay in Hamilton after being chosen 45th overall by the Ti-Cats.

Gryphons Defensive Lineman Cam Thorn went 58th overall to the B.C. Lions, one selection ahead of Concordia Punter Dumitru Ionita going to the Calgary Stampeders.  Ionita spent time last season with the CJFL’s Twin Cities Predators.
