What happens when a decades-old fire station meets an ever-taller group of firefighters?

That’s what’s happening in Woodstock, where city officials plan to spend $44,000 to renovate a south-end fire hall.

One of the biggest changes planned in the renovation is expanded doorways.

Doors in the Parkinson Road station are currently 77 inches high.

Building codes require new industrial buildings to have doorframes at least 82.5 inches off the ground – and a number of firefighters fall in-between those two heights.

“We’ve had a number of events with an individual hurting his head on the top of the doorframe as he was walking through,” deputy fire chief Brian Arnold tells CTV News.

“It became a matter of health and safety.”

Also included in the renovation is an expanded front foyer, which Arnold says will be more accessible for visitors.

Firefighters had argued for building a new south-end station, but councillors worried about the proposed $4-million cost and opted instead for the renovation plan.

Woodstock Mayor Pat Sobeski declined to speak to CTV News for this story.
