Students in Ohsweken will soon be able to get a bachelor’s degree without leaving their home community.

Ontario’s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities announced Monday that Bachelor of Arts degrees are now available through Six Nations Polytechnic Aboriginal Institute.

The degrees will be offered for programs studying the Mohawk and Cayuga languages.

It’s the first time the province has permitted an aboriginal-run school to offer a degree program.

“Our government has made a clear commitment to learn from the past, build on our success stories, and increase our efforts to help indigenous learners get the education and training they need,” Reza Moridi, the minister of training, colleges and universities, said in a press release.

“This new degree program will help improve indigenous learners’ access to, participation in, and completion of postsecondary education and training programs in Ontario.”

Creating degree programs for aboriginal languages was one of the 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
