The province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an incident shut down Highway 401 in Cambridge Monday night.

The SIU says they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 56-year-old man who fell from the Hespeler Road overpass onto the 401.

Police received several calls about the man around 8 p.m.

After they arrived he fell.

The SIU says he was taken to Cambridge Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Police closed the highway in both directions just after 8 p.m.

The westbound lanes re-opened a short time later.

One eastbound lane remained closed for hours for the investigation.
