Thirteen people spent the night in a hotel after fire broke out at a spiritual retreat centre just north of Guelph.

Firefighters were called to Loyola House, part of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre on Highway 6 in Guelph-Eramosa Township, around 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

The first crew on scene found light smoke in a crawlspace.

Entering the crawlspace, they found fire consuming insulation.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before smoke spread past one wing of the two-storey building’s ground floor.

They later determined that the fire was started when an electrical conductor short-circuited.

Damage is estimated at $15,000.

No injuries were reported.
