Waterloo Regional Police say there is no threat to public safety following an incident which saw officers draw their weapons in downtown Kitchener.

Around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to an apartment building on Weber Street, near Ontario Street after being told four men with handguns were in the area.

“The men were seen inside the courtyard (and) were seen entering the building,” said Waterloo Regional Police Supt. Kevin Thaler.

Police began going door-to-door inside the building, telling residents to head outside.

One unit that was of particular interest to police was found to be vacant, Thaler said, and as a result police are continuing to investigate the claims of weapons.

“There are some questions in regards to the veracity of the information that we received,” he said.

“Certain parts of the story corroborate, but there are other parts that we’ve got some concerns about.”

After an hour, police cleared the scene and residents were allowed back into the building.

Nearby businesses and one school were placed in a hold-and-secure procedure while police searched the area, Thaler said.
