Last year’s winter that was, combined with multiple days on the streets in mid-November, have left Waterloo Region’s municipalities in the red when it comes to their snow-clearing budgets.

The region itself leads the way, with officials there expecting a snow maintenance deficit of more than $1 million if the last few weeks of the year see a normal amount of snowfall.

“No municipality knows exactly where it’s going to end up,” says regional chair Ken Seiling.

The region does have $800,000 sitting in a reserve fund meant to cover overruns during particularly snowy years.

At the City of Kitchener, officials are likewise experiencing a snowier year than they’d budgeted for.

“As of right now, we’re expecting a $900,000 deficit in the winter maintenance budget,” says Scott Berry, the city’s manager of operations.

Cambridge is projecting a $250,000 maintenance deficit for 2014, while Waterloo appears set to come in about $100,000 over budget.
