Over the past week, anti-Semitic and other racial graffiti has been found in two separate areas of Wilfrid Laurier University’s campus in Waterloo.

School officials say the graffiti was found in two washrooms – one in the school’s science building, and one near a cafeteria.

“It was actually two students … that reported it immediately,” said Laura Mae Lindo, the school’s director of diversity and equity.

The graffiti was quickly removed. Officials continue to investigate where it came from.

Laurier students say they were surprised to hear about hateful graffiti showing up at their school.

“It doesn’t reflect what Laurier was about, and what most people in Laurier believe in,” said Kyle Kagen, a first-year student.

In part because of these and other incidents, school officials are planning a summit to address concerns about racism.

“Providing those little spaces for (people) to be able to talk and think about that is important,” Lindo said.

The summit is scheduled for March 21, to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Racism.
