Signs for supporter’s front lawns can now go up across the region as campaigns for the upcoming fall municipal elections have now begun.

Troy Glover put up campaign signs on his lawn, hoping to teach his daughters about the importance of voting.

“It promotes the idea that people should be thinking about their local candidates and getting involved in the election,” he said.

With key positions like the Mayor of Kitchener and Mayor of Waterloo are up for grabs, residents like Carol Stewart are watching closely.

“Don’t tell me what they’re doing wrong, tell me what you’re going to do right,” she said.

Two candidates that won’t have to campaign as hard as the others are Uptown Waterloo Coun. Melissa Durrell, and Waterloo Ward 1 candidate Bob Mavin.

After Friday’s deadline no one filed to run against them, so both will officially be acclaimed winners.

Now that Durrell’s race is over, she said her focus will be shifting.

“I still plan on engaging citizens and talking to them about the issues that are going on in our city, and try to do the best job that I can over the next four years,” said Durrell.
