Politicians contradicting each other is nothing new – but Thursday morning, they did it in a court of law.

Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris and Brant County Mayor Ron Eddy were both called to testify at the fraud trial of former Woolwich mayor Todd Cowan.

Both were shown receipts Cowan had submitted to the township from meals he ate while at a conference in Ottawa in August 2012.

In submitting the receipts for reimbursement, Cowan claimed one of the meals was with Harris and the other with Eddy.

Harris told the court that he wasn’t in Ottawa at the time, while Eddy said he doesn’t attend one-on-one breakfasts while at conferences.

Cowan faces charges of fraud and breach of trust in connection with more than $2,700 worth of expenses he billed to multiple municipal agencies.

He has pleaded not guilty, and said that he repaid the money once he learned of the issues.

His lawyer has suggested that Cowan was unfamiliar with government expense policies, and did not intentionally double-bill the same expenses.

Cowan was elected mayor of Woolwich in 2010, and finished fourth out of four candidates in his 2014 bid for re-election.

Following Thursday’s testimony, the trial is on a break until Feb. 29, 2016.
