A drug dangerous to children was inadvertently left in an Owen Sound restaurant, and then stolen.

Police in that city say everybody should be aware of the methadone being unaccounted for, but especially parents – as it can be dangerous to children even in small doses.

Methadone is a synthetic drug often given to people recovering from addictions to more dangerous substances such as heroin or Fentanyl.

Police say a man carrying methadone in his backpack accidentally left the bag behind at a 9th Street East restaurant around 9 a.m. Monday.

After being unable to find the backpack, he contacted police two days later.

Inside the camouflage-coloured backpack, police say, was a black carrying case that contained six 200-millilitre bottles of methadone.

Methadone is an orange liquid which some people may mistake for juice or another drink, and police say the methadone missing in Owen Sound comes in bottles similar to juice boxes.

Anyone with information about the methadone’s whereabouts is asked to contact police.
