Four days after a man was allegedly stabbed to death inside a Brantford home, police are finally able to re-enter the building and search for evidence.

Forty-four-year-old John Liggins was found dead Saturday morning, outside a townhouse on Sympatica Crescent.

His common-law partner of six years, 32-year-old Tara Koiter, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death.

She made a brief court appearance Monday, spending most of the proceedings sitting quietly in the courtroom.

At one point, she put her head into her hands and started sobbing.

Her appearance ended with her being sent back into custody. Her next court date is set for Feb. 16.

As Koiter’s court appearance took place, police continued to guard the townhouse where she and Liggins lived.

Officers were unable to enter the building, as they waited for a judge to grant a search warrant.

The warrant was approved around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at which point police said that they expected to spend most of the day and part of Wednesday at the site.

Twelve detectives have been assigned to the case.
