A plane was extensively damaged Friday afternoon when it crashed in the northern portion of Wellington County, but police say neither the pilot nor his passenger were badly hurt.

The Piper Turbo Arrow 3 aircraft went down shortly after 2 p.m. in a field near the intersection of Highway 89 and Wellington Road 16, between Mount Forest and Shelburne.

According to Wellington County OPP, the male pilot and female passenger – both from the Sarnia-area community of Mooretown – were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police say the plane was making an emergency landing in the field.

What caused the need for the emergency landing remains under investigation.
