It wasn’t just the guns that had brought them there.

And it wasn’t just the pipe bomb that grabbed headlines upon its discovery.

In fact, Waterloo Regional Police say, what they found inside a Kitchener apartment was a veritable treasure trove of alleged criminality.

“It wasn’t just drugs or … firearms. There’s theft and stolen property and also fraudulent-type offences taking place,” said Insp. Greg Lamport.

It was last Friday that police entered an apartment on Connaught Avenue, acting on information suggesting they would find guns inside.

They say they found the guns – a handgun and an assault rifle.

They also found a number of other items.

Lamport lists the tally as including marijuana and other drugs, devices capable of creating fake credit cards, stolen mail and the homemade explosive device.

“Everything involved was pretty serious,” he said.

A 49-year-old man and 32-year-old woman, both of whom live on Connaught, were taken into custody.

They face charges relating to drug trafficking, weapons offences and possession of stolen property.

People who live in the Vanier neighbourhood say they’re surprised to learn what was allegedly going on under their noses.

“There’s probably kids living in that building, so it’s kind of scary,” said Alissa Frimpong.

While the bomb was safely removed and taken for disposal, police say it had the potential to cause a “significant” amount of damage.
