St. Patrick’s Day is a busy day for police officers, particularly in Waterloo’s university district.

Like many police organizations, Waterloo Regional Police have taken to posting highlights of the day on Twitter.

Thursday’s tweets included multiple shots of police officers smiling with ordinary citizens.

Normally, there wouldn’t be anything surprising about that – but what makes these photos more unusual is that the citizens had just been busted for operating illegal house parties.

“These party organizers say ‘it’s all part of St. Paddys’ after kegs removed from their residence. #respect #begolden,” police said in one tweet.

The photos drew a number of surprised replies.

“I feel like this is an ‘only in Canada’ type of thing,” said Kate Bueckert.

Alcohol seized from unlicenced keg parties is held for evidence and then destroyed, police said.
