More than 100 workers at a Guelph fibreglass plant were told this week that they’ll soon be out of work.

Owens Corning is in the midst of a restructuring, which will see a significant portion of its production moved to Mexico.

Of the company’s 169 current employees in the city, only 50 or so are expected to retain their jobs past 2016.

Workers found out about the impending changes at a Monday night staff meeting.

“Nobody knows what is going to happen,” plant employee Ross Alarie told CTV News.

“I was hoping to do another three years here.”

One longtime and recently retired employee said he remembered there being more than 600 people employed at the York Road plant when he first started.

“Some of my friends are going to be hurting,” Jim Simpson said.

The company says it will continue to produce continuous filament mat fibreglass out of Guelph following the restructuring.
