A six alarm fire has gutted a Guelph restaurant and damaged the apartments attached to it.

The fire broke out at 37 Yarmouth Street around 6 a.m. Friday. Guelph fire fighters say it took over two hours to put out the blaze.

“There is significant damage to the restaurant. Some of the smoke had extended up into the second and third floor, but damage was not significant to those areas,” said John Benedetti, fire investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office.

Everyone got out of the building safely. There are 19 rental units in the building.

Tenants were allowed into the building on Saturday to get some belongings, but there is no word on when they will be allowed to return.

“It may take several days, if not weeks before they are actually able to return back to their apartments,” Benedetti said.

The Red Cross is helping displaced tenants.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating what caused the fire.

“We’re still working on where the fire started, but we’re confident it originated somewhere inside the kitchen area,” Benedetti said, referring to the restaurant.

Damage is estimated at over a million dollars.
