The Ontario NDP have selected a candidate to run in the Kitchener-Waterloo byelection expected this fall.

Catherine Fife, chairperson of the Waterloo Region District School Board and president of the Ontario Public School Boards association, was the only candidate to enter her name in the race to represent the New Democrats.

In a speech to supporters following her official appointment, Fife mentioned her strong ties to the riding and the area.

“This community has educated me about what kind of leadership they want over the last nine years, and I know what they value,” said Fife.

Fife has also said she would resign from her positions to run. A date for the byelection has not yet been announced by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
