An off-duty police officer is being praised after saving a swimmer in Port Elgin.

Just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police, fire and ambulance officials responded to a report of three swimmers in distress near Gobles Grove.

An off-duty Saugeen Shores police officer at the scene saw the three were having trouble in the high waves and strong winds.

Police Constable Fletcher began his swim out into the lake with a floatation device.  Two of the swimmers, brothers in their teens, were successfully making their way to shore but their sister continued to struggle against the waves.  She was clenching to an inflatable pool toy, but it was not sturdy enough to assist in her ability to swim.

Officer Fletcher made his way out to the 20-year-old female and brought her safely to shore.

All three were unharmed and refused any treatment by EMS.
