Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is investigating a nurse at a long-term care home in Paris, following the discovery that her employer has no paperwork to prove she is a registered practical nurse.

The nurse has also been placed on investigative leave by Park Lane Terrace, the home in question, where she started working in 2015.

The College of Nurses of Ontario’s website contains a database of all registered nurses in the province. A search of that database turns up no entries for Laura Erskine.

A spokesperson for the college also says Erskine is not registered as a nurse in Ontario.

CTV News contacted Park Lane Terrace on Tuesday, and was told that there was no issue with Erskine.

Later, administrators took her off any duties related to registered practical nursing, including giving out medication.

Officials at the home said that they screen new hires “really well” and that Erskine has been registered since 2014.

Erskine and administrators at Park Lane Terrace declined interviews for this story. Both claimed the issue was a “clerical error,” but as of Wednesday evening had not produced any proof of her qualifications.

Park Lane Terrace officials say they have proper paperwork for every nurse they employ, except for Erskine.

Miranda Ferrier, the president of the Ontario Personal Support Worker Association, has lodged a complaint about Erskine with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

She says that as she understands it, “there is no such thing as a clerical error,” and she finds the situation concerning.

“If this person is not an RPN, how are we to know that they know exactly what they’re doing?” she said.

Erskine is represented by the union CLAC. Like officials at Park Lane Terrace, CLAC says it first learned about allegations against Erskine when they were contacted by CTV News.

“We caution against jumping to conclusions without a thorough investigation,” CLAC representative Ken Dam said in a statement.

“CLAC will cooperate with the College of Nurses, but will also provide representation for our member, if required to ensure a fair and equitable process of investigation is followed.”

One woman who has a relative staying at Park Lane Terrace told CTV News that she was shocked to hear Erskine was under investigation, as she was known to be very caring with residents of the home.
