A Cambridge woman is accused of using a debit card belonging to a minor sports organization to make personal purchases.

Waterloo Regional Police say they were called to investigate claims that a board member of the Hespeler Minor Softball Association had committed fraud and theft.

"Our investigation revealed someone had used a debit card to make personal purchases and withdrawals with that debit card," said police spokesperson Cherri Greeno.

They say their investigation found that more than $5,000 was misappropriated from the group during 2015 and 2016.

Kimberly Melo-Roberts, 33, was arrested Monday in connection with the investigation.

She was the president of Hespeler Minor Softball Association but stepped down over the summer.

Coach and board member Aaron Fisher says it’s a large amount of money for the small organization to lose.

"I hope that doesn't hurt us too bad financially."

Fisher says Melo-Roberts and her family have always contributed to the community.

“They do a lot of good, positive things for the community,” he said.

Cambridge YMCA confirms she is an employee and the company is aware of the allegations.

Melo-Roberts faces one charge of theft over $5,000 and will appear in court in January.
