Walkerton has added its name to a list of those interested in becoming a site for a nuclear waste depository.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is looking for a municipality willing to store Canada's high-level nuclear waste.

Brockton is inviting the agency to complete an initial screening for the Walkerton area but Mayor David Inglis says nothing will happen without the support of residents.

Chris Peabody, the lone council member to vote against the proposal, says it would involve nuclear waste being buried at a depth of 500 metres.

The project comes with a promised $200 million in annual payroll.
